During my time at Wesleyan, I’ve had the privilege and joy of being a part of Shakti – Wesleyan’s South Asian Student Organization. I joined Shakti in my freshman year and served on the executive board during my sophomore and junior years. Currently, in my senior year, I am the Co-President. 

Being a part of Shakti has been one of the most integral parts of my time at Wesleyan and holds a very special place in my heart. As a new, international student on a predominantly white campus, I often felt  homesick and lonely. I found myself seeking the most comfort in friends who could relate to me and shared similar backgrounds. This fuelled my desire to ensure that other students feel connected to and find comfort in others who have similar cultural backgrounds to them. Everyone has their close friends, but to feel like there is a larger community on campus to which you belong adds a safety net like no other. 

Celebrating festivals such as Diwali, Holi, and Eid, hosting chai and game nights at my house and organizing formals, has undoubtedly been one of my most special memories at college. From coordinating venues, to managing budgets, to marketing events, leading Shakti has taught me many valuable skills. It has not only honed my teamwork, communication and time management skills, but also taught me how to solve problems creatively and adapt to changing circumstances.

My favorite part of Shakti is Samsara – Shakti’s annual cultural showcase and our most anticipated event of the year. Our members sing, dance, act and play instruments. One of the highlights is the dances performed by each grade, for which I have had the privilege of choreographing my class’s routine each year. Leading our group practices and teaching the dances has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The collective energy and passion that emerges as we work towards a shared goal is unparalleled. Being a member of Shakti has enriched my college experience with unforgettable memories and invaluable skills. It has brought me a community, a sense of belonging, and lifelong friendships!
